PHNOM PENH, October 8, (Khmer Times) – A young male elephant was found dead in Mondulkiri Province’s  Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary last week. Its trunk and tusks were chopped off.

Chhit Sophal, the Mondulkiri provincial director of the environment department, said he is offering a $500 reward (2,000,000 riels) out of his own pocket to anyone who can provide information leading to the arrest of the person/persons who killed the elephant.

Mr. Chhit Sophal said the dead elephant was about 8 years old – an adolescent.

“I feel unhappy and regret about it. Why did they kill such a small elephant?” he said.

He estimates that about 100 young elephants live in the sanctuary.

The provincial government is investigating the incident.
