A group of fishermen discovered a dead whale shark entangled in fishing nets on Friday in Kep province.
 
The rare whale shark, which weighed nearly 400 kilograms, was nearly four metres long, according to a statement released by the provincial government.
 
The statement said the shark died from being entangled in the net and that government officials visited the fishermen to educate them to ensure it does not happen again in the future.
 
“The shark died due to being caught in the net for a long time,” the statement said. “We have buried the body and educated the fishermen.”
 
Chan Thon, a fisherman in Kep town, where the shark was found, said he has never seen such a fish before.
 
“We are sorry to see the big fish die,” he said.
 
Kuch Vireak, director of the Kep Fisheries Office, could not be reach for comment yesterday.
