Hundreds of cubic metres of luxury timber were yesterday seized from a warehouse belonging to Oknha Thai Senglong, a well known businessman in the north east of Cambodia.

Chroeng Khmao, chief prosecutor at Stung Treng provincial court, said the timber was seized after the Stung Treng city warehouse was raided by the National Committee for Forest Crime Prevention, provincial military police, forest administration officers and court representatives.

“The timber had been purchased without authorisation,” Mr Khmao said.

“After the seizure, the timber was handed over to the provincial forest administration to process the case through the courts.”

A military police officer who asked not to be named said Oknha Senglong operated in Stung Treng, Kratie, Ratanakkiri, and Mondulkiri provinces, along the Cambodia-Vietnam border.

The businessman is known for exporting luxury timber for sale in Vietnam.

The government banned the export of timber to neighbouring countries in 2014, but Oknha Senglong had continued to send wood to Vietnam, the officer said.

Sar Vuthy, the head of the provincial forest administration, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
