Following the arrest of rice farmer Ty Tey on Monday evening over the rape-murder of 30-year-old Kreth Sreymom in Mondulkiri province, a second man has been arrested, accused by police of being Mr. Tey’s accomplice in the crime.
Brigadier General So Sovann, head of Mondulkiri provincial penal police, said Kohm Chan, 25, from Kampong Cham province, had been arrested and was being questioned after Ms. Sreymom’s naked body was found in a forest in Keo Siema district on Sunday.
“He was the accomplice,” Brig. Gen. Sovann told Khmer Times.
“He was arrested in accordance with the answers of the previous one [Ty Tey],” he said, although he declined to elaborate on what connected the pair, or what Mr. Chan’s role may have been.
A provincial penal police officer, who asked not to be named, confirmed yesterday that the two suspects are still being temporarily detained at the provincial police headquarters. Both are due to be sent to the provincial court for questioning today.
According to Brig. Gen. Sovann on Tuesday, Mr. Tey confessed to the murder of his sister-in-law, but denied raping her, claiming her clothes had come off during the violent murder. “He confessed to beating the back of her neck with a stick many times, breaking her neck. He then dragged her body into the forest and escaped on a motorbike.
“He said the reason he killed her was because he got angry that she often cursed him and looked down on him.”
