A second giant Aeon mall will open its doors in Phnom Penh in 2018 to the Kingdom’s fast growing group of affluent shoppers who prefer high-end retail outlets.

According to South Korean media reports, the Japanese conglomerate Aeon last Friday reached an agreement with Hyundai Engineering for the construction of a $120 million mega Aeon Mall 2 in Phnom Penh city that is expected to be finished by May 2018.

Under the deal, the Korean builder will construct a four-story mall covering an area of 151,000 square meters in the Pong Peay City Project site in Phnom Penh’s Toul Kork suburb. Aeon Mall 2 will have large department stores, movie theatres, a bowling alley, high-end retail outlets, restaurants, pubs and food malls.

According to a Hyundai Engineering official who did not want to be named, the South Korean firm will also “actively bid to construct additional shopping malls that Aeon is planning to build in China, Indonesia and Vietnam.”

President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents Ang Kim Eang said the decision made by Aeon for the construction of its second mega mall in Phnom Penh was based on burgeoning consumer demand due to the growth of the middle and upper middle class and also the increasing number of international tourists choosing to shop in the city.

“This [Aeon Mall 2] will be a significant boost to our country’s tourism and retail sectors,” said Mr. Kim Eang. “Luxurious mega malls not only cater to tourists but also to local people. The mall will not only retail imported products but will also sell locally manufactured ones. This is another contribution to the economy,” said Mr. Kim Eang.

Mr.Kim Eang also recommended that Aeon consider building more malls in the Kingdom – especially in the provincial capitals.

“They should think about building malls in Siem Reap, Kampong Cham and Sihanoukville provinces where there is also potential from international tourists and the locals,” he added.

Last year, Cambodia attracted some 4.8 million foreign tourists – a slight increase of more than five per cent compared to 2014, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism.

The first Aeon mall was officially launched by Prime Minister Hun Sen, with a capital investment of some $205 million. The mega mall, which covers more than 68,000 square meters, is located on Sothearos Boulevard next to the Sofitel Hotel and the Russian Embassy. Aeon’s large car park can hold approximately 1,400 cars and 1,600 motorbikes.

Aeon Mall Phnom Penh General Manager Makoto Yajima told Khmer Times earlier his company’s mega malls are aimed primarily at Phnom Penh residents. “We came to Cambodia to provide a service to the local people.”
