Five endangered polecats were rescued yesterday morning after provincial military police in collaboration with Wildlife Alliance staff stopped a man on a motorbike who was attempting to sell them at the Veal Ring market in Preah Sihanouk’s Real Rinh commune, according to Prey Nob district police officer Rath Chamroeun.
He added that despite being able to save the animals, the motorbike rider managed to escape into the crowd.
“The suspect had carried these endangered ferrets and tried to sell them at the Veal Ring market,” Mr. Chamroeun told Khmer Times.
“The military police seized his motorbike but the driver managed to escape arrest,” he added.
Hak Sarom, leader of the Wildlife Alliance team that collaborated with police, said the endangered polecats have been sent to Takeo’s Tamao Zoo for release.
