PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – The Royal Academy of Cambodia border research team said yesterday the maps showing the country’s borders being used by the government and the opposition were identical.
The maps are being cited by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) ás a basis for settling demarcation disputes with Vietnam.
The opposition accuses the government of using maps that favor Vietnam.
“The maps from the CNRP and CPP are the same, while they are different from the maps from the UN,”said the research group’s Sok Touch.
Dr. Touch said his group supported using these maps in negotiations with Vietnam.
“If the CNRP accuses the government of being a thief, they are also thieves because the maps from them both are the same,” he said.
Despite Mr. Touch’s verification, the opposition has not recognized it because it had no representative present to confirm the comparison, although the research group invited the government and the opposition to send officials to monitor the research.
The government did not send a representative either.
