MONDULKIRI, (Khmer Times) – Three vehicles trying to smuggle exotic timber into Vietnam were apprehended Thursday in Pechr Chenda district and the drivers were arrested.
People living in the area report that they have seen many vehicles, large and small, on their way to the Vietnam border crossing. The wood transports, although illegal, seemed to have no problems getting through the checkpoint. They assume that the explanation is simple – corruption.
The three vehicles were sent to the forestry administration office, although rumor has it that four vehicles were involved. One of the vehicles was a military truck bearing RCAF plates.
The ministry disclosed no information as to how a military vehicle was involved in the transporting of contraband goods, nor as to what will happen to the vehicles.
It must be assumed that the police and/or the forestry officials will try to find out who is behind this illegal operation.
