Kandal Provincial Court is investigating the case of a 31-year-old prisoner who reportedly committed suicide by jumping off a five-metre-high water tank located on prison grounds.
Court spokesman Tin Sochetra said yesterday that the court does not believe the prisoner committed suicide.
“The provincial court prosecutor is now working on this case,” he said, adding that the body of the deceased has been handed over to his family.
Mr Sochetra declined to speak in detail about the case.
A police officer at the provincial prison, who asked not to be named, confirmed that a prisoner died on Saturday after he was allowed to come out of his cell for work and fell from the water tower.
He identified the victim as Muth Lina, a farmer from Sa-ang district’s Koh Khael commune, who was temporarily detained in prison after being charged with intentionally causing damage following his arrest on December 12.
However, according to rumours from other inmates, Mr Lina had been in an argument with another prisoner and was pushed from the roof of the prison, killing him instantly.
Chath Sineang, chief of Kandal Provincial Prison, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
