A police officer with the municipal penal police in Phnom Penh was arrested on Sunday night after shooting two bullets in the air while in an argument with his wife.
The shooting took place at about 11.30 pm in Por Sen Chey district’s Chom Chao II commune, after the officer’s wife refused to travel into the heart of the city for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Meng Touch, a Por Sen Chey district police officer, identified the suspect as Captain Sok Reatrey, 35, a municipal police officer now accused of illegal use of a weapon.
Mr Touch said that the officer’s wife also asked for a divorce during the argument, which led to the suspect firing his gun.
“He was angry at his wife for refusing to go downtown with him and for asking for a divorce,” he said. “He then withdrew a pistol from his waist and fired two bullets into the air to threaten her.”
“No one was injured,” he added. “And he was later arrested by district police.”
He said police confiscated a pistol along with some ammunition after his arrest.
Yim Sarann, Por Sen Chey district police chief, said yesterday that the suspect has been detained for further questioning by police.
“He fired the gun illegally,” he said. “He has now been sent to his penal police unit for further investigations and decisions.”Chuon Sovann, chief of Phnom Penh Municipal Police, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
