A farmer was arrested on Tuesday for burning down his brother’s house over an unpaid debt in Kampong Speu province’s Baseth district.

Sak Sokha, Baseth district deputy police chief, identified the suspect as Ou Thoeun, 40, a farmer, and the victim as his brother Ou Leap, 45, also a farmer.

Mr Sokha said that prior to the arson, the suspect got drunk on rice wine and got into an argument with his brother.

A debt of $500 dating back to 2016 and used to build the now-destroyed house was brought up.

Enraged, Mr Thoeun poured a bottle of gasoline in the victim’s house and set it ablaze.

“The fire burned down the house completely and destroyed everything in it,” Mr Sokha said.

He said that after the arson, the suspect fled but was later caught by local police.

The destruction of the house and of the items inside it cost an estimated $12,000.

Mr Thoeun is facing up to two years in prison.
