An annual National Committee for Disaster Management report shows that natural disasters have killed at least 103 people, injured 120 people, and affected 2,000 families while also damaging thousands of houses, crops and infrastructure this year.

The 2017 report noted that 174 storms led to six deaths, 55 injuries, levelled 579 homes and damaged another 4,027.

It added that the roofs of 40 school buildings were also damaged, along with 28 state buildings being damaged.

Lightning strikes killed 80 people, injured 63 people, and 74 cattle were killed and nine homes damaged, the report said.

Rain and Mekong River flooding hit 16 provinces, leading to 17 deaths and the evacuation of 1,734 people. At least 14,341 houses were affected by the flooding, with 3,456 hectares of rice crops and 355 hectares of other crops damaged as well.

“This year, we have observed that the deaths caused by flooding and lighting strikes have actually decreased compared to last year,” said NCDM spokesman Keo Vy.

In 2016, 129 people were killed by natural disasters, according to the 2017 report.
