A 22-year-old was yesterday charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court over the killing of his 19-year-old girlfriend.
Hour Mengvang, chief of Sen Sok district police, identified the suspect as Suy Mesa, a clothes vendor living in Takeo province’s Daun Keo city.
The court yesterday charged him with intentional murder and detained him at Prey Sar prison pending his trial.
Mr Mengvang said the suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Takeo province after he allegedly killed his girlfriend Sek Siya, 19, who worked at a karaoke bar in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district.
The murder occurred on December 15.
Seng Savuth, a Sen Sok district police officer, said that on December 15 at about 11.30 pm, the suspect went to sleep at his girlfriend’s rental room.
He said the pair had sex. The victim then got a phone call from another man, upsetting the suspect, who stabbed the victim.
“According to the suspect’s confession, he killed the victim by stabbing her many times with a knife in her chest and stomach,” he said. “He confessed that he killed her because he was jealous and angry at her.” He added that after killing the victim, the suspect fled to hide at his home in Takeo province.
He was later arrested based on evidence provided by witnesses.
