Two farmers were seriously injured after a homemade grenade exploded on them during a fishing trip in Battambang province on Monday night.
The incident took place in Rukhakiri district’s Basac commune.
District police chief Sea Thy said four farmers had made their own grenades using firework powder and taken them to the river to use as a means of catching fish to sell.
“They set alight the grenade in order to throw it into the river, but it exploded immediately,” Mr Thy said. “The farmer who was holding the grenade lost five fingers and suffered facial injuries. The other suffered serious wounds.”
Local police stationed nearby heard the explosion and attended the scene, sending the two victims to Mong Russey Hospital for treatment.
Mr Thy called on villagers not to use homemade explosives or guns to catch fish.
