Kampong Thom Provincial Court charged a military officer yesterday for drunkenly firing an unlicensed weapon.

Path Kosal, an officer from the Kampong Thom Provincial Military Police, identified the accused as Major Cheth Thuon, 43.
He was charged with illegal use of a weapon and faces up to two years in prison if convicted.

Mr Thuon was arrested by military police on Monday after he fired his pistol in the air while drinking heavily with some friends.

“He was heavily intoxicated, and thought that firing his pistol in the air would sober him up,” Mr Kosal said. “The gunfire frightened neighbours and drew the military police to the scene.” The military police arrested Mr Thuon at the scene and seized his gun with six unused bullets and his military ID card.
