Cambodian athletes have continued their impressive international Petanque form, bringing home silverware from the 1st Asian Boules Sport Confederation Petanque Championship, which finished in Bangkok yesterday.
Thailand topped the standings with three gold, two silver and one bronze, although Cambodia came a close second after winning three gold and two bronze medals.
Somai Sokea, the deputy secretary-general and chairman of the Cambodian delegation, said 12 athletes formed the Cambodian squad.
The men were represented by World Championship gold medallist Sok Chanmean, Thoung Chhern, Ya Chandararith and Kherm Sokpheak, while the women’s squad was made up of Petanque legend Ke Leng, Ouk Sreymom, Ouk Sreyya and Doung Dyna.
A youth squad consisted of Khoun Lyhoy, Heab Vakherm, Koy Sokpheaktra and Keo Pheakdey.
The latest spate of medals come after Cambodian athletes brought home two taekwondo gold and a silver medal from the Ambassador’s Cup Championship in Seoul, South Korea late last week.
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports announced its intention to invite athletes to the Peace Palace on Friday to receive prizemoney from a special sports fund.
The government has repeated its commitment to accelerating sporting participation in the kingdom ahead of the 2023 SEA Games, which will be hosted here.
