The Interior Ministry filed a complaint to the National Police yesterday, asking them to search and arrest a man who impersonated high-ranking government officials.
Chhan Chansopheak, spokesman for the ministry’s general administration department, said his department filed the complaint after hearing reports of an impersonator cheating money from officials by promising them a promotion.
A statement obtained yesterday said in recent weeks a man used the name of Ros Sophann, secretary of state at the Ministry of Public Service, to call low ranking officials and extort money on the promise of a higher rank.
“Please do not believe this person who impersonated leaders to steal money,” the statement said. “These actions are illegal and police are searching for this man to arrest him.” Oun Chanthy, chief of personnel at the general administration department, said he recently received information that officials in Mondolkiri, Pursat, Battambang, Kompong Thom and Preah Sihanouk provinces have fallen victims to the scam.
“It is not in our habit to promote a civil servant through bribery and corruption,” Mr Chanthy said. “To promote an official we have to follow a strict procedure and report it to the rightful authorities.”
