Four Vietnamese nationals were arrested in Ratanakkiri province for illegal logging along the border with Vietnam on Saturday.
Local media reported the men were arrested with cutting tools near the protected Kantuy Neak area by officers from the Ministry of Environment.
The same report alleged that provincial department officials went to the area before the ministry officials, but did not make any arrest. The report speculates they were likely taking bribes from the loggers. Peo Sophonn, an officer at the provincial environment department, declined to comment, saying the case was “out of his hands.”
Department director Phon Khemrin did not respond to multiple requests for comments.
The four Vietnamese men were identified as Don Ngoc Tan, 24, Ngo Vann Ngoc, 58, Dam Duk Jung, 25, and Chin Ngoc Ving, 22.
Provincial court deputy prosecutor Ra Borany said the men are to be sent to court.
