More than six tonnes of expired foods and goods collected since January were burned in Preah Sihanouk province on Wednesday.
Minister of Commerce Pan Sorasak said the 6,080 kilograms of tainted goods were seized by officers at markets across the province.
The goods destroyed included powdered milk, beverages, food and seafood.
“It is the role of the ministry’s CamControl department in every province to protect the people against tainted food sold in markets,” Mr Sorasak said.
The minister also called for people to check the expiry dates of food and to inform CamControl.
“We need to protect the health of the people, especially infants and children.”
At the same time, director general of CamControl Mak Pichrith threatened legal action against those who import tainted goods and any traders who continue to sell tainted or expired goods.
