Three men were charged yesterday by Phnom Penh Municipal Court for kidnapping nine Thai nationals in order to demand ransoms from their families.
Ly Sothy of the Ministry of Interior’s penal department identified the suspects as Chen Chin Hao, 44, Kuo Fan Lang, 42, both from Taiwan, and Yong Yee Kuan, 43, from Malaysia.
“They were charged by the municipal court with detention and unlawful confinement,” he said.
The trio faces up to five years in jail if convicted.
Lieutenant General Sok Khemarin, chief of the penal police department, said they were arrested Tuesday after police raided a rented villa in Phnom Penh.
“They were arrested following information from the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. The victims, seven men and two women, called their embassy for help,” Lt Gen Khemarin said.
The victims were held for three days. They have now been reunited with their families through the embassy.
