A 24-year-old man was yesterday convicted by Phnom Penh Municipal Court and sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of his 23-year-old niece, whom he robbed of her smartphone in Chbar Ampov district.
Presiding judge Lim Makaroan identified the convict as Pov Vuthy, who killed Pov Sopheak, a garment worker.
“The court decided to convict and sentence him to 15 years in prison,” he said.
The murder took place on February 10 at about 8pm in Veal Sbov commune. Mr Vuthy was arrested the following day and subsequently charged with intentional murder.
Ly Vichetr, a Chbar Ampov district police officer, said Mr Vuthy, who was then a drug user, visited the victim’s house while the she was not at home to steal her phone.
In the middle of the robbery, the victim arrived home with her two-year-old daughter, and Mr Vuthy strangled her s she attempted to take her phone back. “He killed her by strangling her with wires,” said Mr Vichetr. “After killing the victim, he caught her daughter, tied her up in her room and fled.”
At yesterday’s trial, Mr Vuthy admitted his crime.
“The reason I killed her was because she beat me and tried to take the phone from me,” he told the court.
