A 27-year-old man was charged yesterday by the municipal court for trafficking nearly one kilo of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia last week.

Keo Sarith, an anti-drug police officer with the Interior Ministry, identified the accused as Som Vuthy, a taxi driver living in Depo I commune.

On November 20, anti-drug police cooperated with custom and exercise police at Phnom Penh International Airport to seize a total of 793.56 grams of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of vehicle parts from Brazil.

The shipment was addressed to the accused and his address. Mr Sarith said that the accused was later arrested based on the shipment details.

“He was arrested by our police when he came to pick up the shipment sent from Brazil at the airport’s warehouse,” Mr Sarith said. “According to his confession, he was the owner of the shipment.”Mr Sarith added that the accused has been sent by the court’s investigative judge to prison to await his trial.

According to the amount of drugs seized from the accused, he faces from 20 to 30 years in prison if convicted.
