A garment worker died and more than 100 were injured in a traffic accident when the truck transporting them overturned on Tuesday evening in Takeo province’s Bati district.
Deputy district police chief Major Chhorn Troeun Savy said the accident occurred at about 7pm in Chambok commune.
He said the truck was carrying about 120 workers from a garment factory to their homes in the district.
“A worker died instantly at the scene, while the others were injured, some badly, some not so badly,” he said.
Provincial Governor Lay Vannak visited workers in hospital and distributed aid to them.
Three seriously injured workers were transferred to Calmette hospital in Phnom Penh, according to a Labour Ministry statement released yesterday.
Maj Troeun said the truck’s steering shaft broke while in transit, casing the crash.
“The driver Vol Vorn, 32, managed to flee before police arrived at the scene, but the damaged truck was taken to the district police station for further investigation,” he said.
Earlier this month two workers were killed and nearly 100 workers injured in Kampong Cham province’s Cheung Prey district when a truck overturned on the road.
