Banteay Meanchey police have seized nearly a tonne of poor quality chicken that was being imported from Thailand.

Provincial anti-economic crime police chief Mey Bora said the raid took place on Monday on National Road 5 in Serey Sorphon city, where a truck carrying the meat was seized.

“The bad quality chicken meat was made up of 100 packages, equivalent to 850 kilos. It included chicken breasts, chicken thighs, chicken feet and giblets,” he said.

The truck was being used by traders intending to sell the chicken at restaurants in Battambang province.

Anti-economic crime police deputy chief Ros Eam said the driver was Hout Sambo, 24, from Ou Chrov district in Banteay Meanchey.

Mr Sambo told police the chicken was imported through Ou Chrov district’s Ou Bey Choarn corridor after paying security forces 40,000 riel ($10) per truck.

Mr Eam said the chicken was taken to be burned by police. The driver was sent to the provincial court.

Health Ministry spokesman Ly Sovann said yesterday that consuming poor quality products would affect the health of consumers.

He urged people: “Please pay attention to your health. Buy food at the places which are hygienic.

“Do not buy food when you are suspicious that chemicals have been used to make them look fresh and good.

“Do not buy food that is cheaper than normal prices because it is bad quality, expired or has used chemicals to last a long time in storage.”
