A Phnom Penh police officer was yesterday arrested following a botched robbery of a casino in Kandal province’s Leuk Dek district.

Sok Seun, deputy chief of Leuk Dek district police, identified the suspect as Oum Sopheak, 34, a police officer with the municipal investigation unit.

Mr Seun said at about 12.30am, the suspect entered Diamond Casino in K-aom Samnor commune, where he withdrew a pistol from his waist and pointed it at the casino manager as he was closing for the night.

“He pointed the gun at the victim, threatened to kill him and ordered him to give him the money he was counting at the end of the night,” said Mr Seun. “The victim then started attacking him and shouting for help.”

Mr Seun said casino security guards heard the commotion and apprehend the suspect, with no one being injured.

After his arrest, security guards seized the pistol and his police ID card from him and then reported the incident to local police, who took the suspect into custody.

Mr Seun added that the suspect is preliminarily accused by police of “use of an illegal weapon and theft with aggravating circumstances”.

The suspect remains detained at Kandal provincial police headquarters for further questioning.
