Authorities in Kratie province’s Chhlaung district seized ten vans illegally transporting timber to Vietnam on Saturday night, but all the drivers escaped.

Chea Sopheak, deputy prosecutor at the Kratie Provincial Court, said that the ten vans laden with timber were stopped and seized in Snoul district’s Snoul commune and Chet Borey district’s Kantout commune.

“We conducted the operation on Saturday night,” he said. “We stopped them in Kantout commune and in Snoul commune, while the forestry administration stopped one more van from elsewhere, so in total, there are ten vans.”

. .

“We could not arrest the drivers because they managed to escape,” he added. “Some ran into the river and some ran into the forest, scattering all over the place.”

Mr Sopheak said the case has been left in the hands of the local forestry administration to compile a final report for the court.

“We haven’t measured how many cubic metres the wood totalled yet,” he noted. “But I am going along with forestry administration officials to measure the wood soon.”

Chhlaung forestry administration officers could not be reached for comment.
