A jealous husband was arrested on Friday after he set fire to his house and threatened to kill his eight-month-old daughter over suspicions his wife was having an affair.
According to police officer Touch Kosal of the Por Senchey district police, the incident happened in the outskirts of Phnom Penh and involved suspect Saing Vanny, an unemployed 41-year-old, and his wife Neang Phors, 38, a garment worker.
Prior to the incident, the suspect got drunk and argued with his wife over her alleged infidelity with a colleague at her garment factory. As she denied the accusations, the suspect beat her.
Out of anger, he then poured a bottle of gasoline in the house and set it ablaze.
While the house was burning, Mr Kosal said, the suspect snatched his eight-month-old daughter from his wife’s arms and tried to throw her into the fire. “Luckily, the daughter was immediately rescued by neighbours,” Mr Kosal said.
The suspect managed to flee the scene but was arrested soon after. He has been charged with intentional destruction of property, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.
