The official Facebook page of Prime Minister Hun Sen has reached more than nine million “Likes” from people in Cambodia and abroad.

The page, “Samdech Hun Sen, Cambodian Prime Minister” displayed an announcement yesterday that the social network had made interaction with the general public easier, especially young people.

On the page, the Prime Minister said: “This dramatic rise shows strong support from the public from both inside and outside the country.”

The page has been providing information ranging from short messages to responses to recent political issues, in addition to a daily broadcast of the Prime Minister’s activities.

Some Facebook users also use it to express their opinions, most of them supportive, while some take it as a platform against Mr Hun Sen and the Cambodian People’s Party.

Facebook user Bunthorn Yorn commented on the page: “When Samdech is elected at this time, I request one thing only: clear the country of thieves and drugs.

“Do not let them poison the nation. Thank you in advance, we hope that Samdech will eliminate these problems for the people.”

Another Facebook user Pich William in Preah Sihanouk province, wrote a comment expressing concern that electricity poles and wires had collapsed on the road for several months without a response from local authorities.

This led to a quick response from the department of electricity.

According to San Chey of the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability in Cambodia, the best thing Mr Hun Sen had done was solving people’s problems via social networking.

This, he said, also increased Mr Hun Sen’s popularity.

The sudden surge in popularity of the Prime Minister’s Facebook page raised eyebrows.
