A three-year-old girl died on Monday in Battambang province’s Phnom Proek district after a gas tank used for melting gold exploded at her family’s home, police said yesterday.

Sareth Viseth, deputy district police chief, said the girl and her parents were sleeping when the explosion took place. All three were seriously injured.

The girl later died in hospital, he said, adding the parents are in serious condition.

“All of them were seriously injured, but the daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital about 20 kilometres from her house,” he said.

He identified the girl’s father as Kan Sidoeun, 33, a goldsmith, and his wife as Chan Ny, 25.

Mr Viseth blamed an over-capacity gas tank used for melting gold as the main cause of the accident.

“The explosion came from a gas tank used for melting the gold because the house owner is a goldsmith,” he said. “They also used a gas tank in the kitchen, but the explosion was not from that; it was the gold-melting gas tank which was over its capacity.

“As a consequence, the house was also on fire; it was like a grenade explosion.”
