Police are hunting five inmates who broke out of Kampong Speu Provincial Prison early yesterday after smashing their way through a jail health centre roof.
Armed robber Keo Em, 41; drug traffickers Khun Sokhoeun, 21, Long Bunnath, 30, and Run Rany, 22; and murderer Sum Poch, 32, had complained on Monday about being ill.
Prison chief Kak Savun said they were moved to the health centre. At about 1.30am, when the guards were asleep, they broke through the centre roof, climbed the prison fence and fled.
“We are working hard to re-arrest them,” he said.
The authorities said they will strengthen security and carry out strict inspections of prisoners at night.
