Three people died and four others were injured in the early hours of Saturday when a speeding car crashed into a crane truck at Svay Rieng province on National Road 1.
Lieutenant Colonel Chea Sina, deputy Bavet town police chief, said the accident happened at about 1.10am in Bavet town.
Lt Col Sina would not confirm the cause of the accident. An officer who declined to be named, said the driver responsible for the crash was drunk and lost control of his car.
“The fault lies with the first driver. He drove at high speed while he was drunk,” he said.
In the first half of 2017, 919 people died on the country’s roads, up from 908 in the first six months of 2016, according to a recent National Road Safety Committee report.
The report added that 36 percent of crashes were caused by speeding and 11 percent by drunk driving.
