Ou Pheanith, sales manager at Falcon Tech, speaking during the launching ceremony of the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus on Friday, said there were a lot of Apple products smuggled into the country and sold in the grey market, which curtails tax revenue for the government.
“I’m sure you have all seen the iPhone 8 already for sale several weeks ago. But these are all smuggled products,” he said.
“We cooperate with the government to legally import Apple products. Buying legal products guarantees you are getting the quality you are looking for and you also have warranty.
“I would also like to ask customers to buy original accessories for their iPhones, which will give customers peace of mind,” added Mr Pheanith.
The director of Falcon Tech, who is known as Jim, said his company now supplies Apple products to many local phone shops and mobile operator, including Smart Axiata.
“When Cambodian customers buy through our authorised resellers, they will get a better price, better package and warranty, as well as better customer service. That’s how we differentiate ourselves from other outlets selling illegal iPhones,” he said.
Apple released the highly anticipated iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in the US in late September.
Mr Pheanith said his company opened pre-orders for the new iPhone models from November 3 to 9, with very good results. “It exceeded our expectations. We sold many units, which is a lot of higher than with previous models,” he said.
Siv Dalin, the owner of Seang Lin Phone Shop, one of the largest phone shops in Phnom Penh, was also surprised by presales for the new smartphone.
“This year we started offering warranty and the number of customers placing orders has skyrocketed,” she said. “People are increasingly interested in buying famous brands, and Apple is the most famous of all.”
Apple announced on Tuesday its latest product, the iPhone X, which features a new design with all-screen display, wireless charging and a rear camera with dual optical image stabilisation. The new model will be released in Cambodia on November 24.
Thomas Hundt, the CEO of Smart Axiata – one of the largest mobile operators in Cambodia and an authorised reseller of iPhones – told Khmer Times they will offer the iPhone X starting on November 24.
“The official pre-order iPhone X date will be announced very soon,” he said.
“Through our network of Smart Shops and partnership with Apple, we are thrilled that Cambodians will soon be able to enjoy this highly awaited mobile device, in combination with the most comprehensive plans we will offer to enjoy our ever expanding 4.5G network.”
