A prominent businesswoman married to a commune police chief in Stung Treng province was yesterday charged with collecting and transporting timber illegally.

Sesan district military police officer Keo Veasna identified the suspect as Ol Samnang, 42, a timber businesswoman and wife of Srekor commune police chief Thay Sithy.

“She is a luxury wood businesswoman who used her connections to the commune police chief to process illegal timber,” said Mr Veasna. “She possessed and transported the timber without permission.”

Mr Veasna said a mixed taskforce, led by the National Committee for Forest Crime Prevention, raided the suspect’s home on May 22, confiscating 387 pieces of luxury timber in Ta Lath commune.

After further investigation, a warrant for her arrest was issued on Friday and Stung Treng Provincial Court charged her yesterday, sending her to prison for pre-trial detention.

Mr Veasna said Ms Samnang faces one to five years in prison if convicted.

He added the confiscated timber is being held at the provincial forestry department.
