Officials in Svay Rieng province yesterday denied that live pigs are being smuggled into the country across the Vietnamese border.

Reports in local media alleged that smuggling is common at the border in Rumdoul and Romeas Hek districts.

The reports showed photo and video evidence of live animals being brought into the country without the correct licences.

Rumdoul and Romeas Hek district police officials said they had no knowledge of the smuggling.

Svay Rieng provincial governor Men Vibol declined to comment, referring the issue to provincial hall spokesman Ros Tharith, who said he could not verify the reports.

“I am not sure if that is true. In general, we prohibit the import of pigs into the province if they don’t have a licence,” he said.

Provincial deputy governor Pich Sovann said he would meet relevant parties to discuss the issue yesterday.
