A dolphin was discovered dead on the shore of Koh Pos yesterday in Preah Sihanouk province.
Kan Loeung, chief of commune three, said a group of tourists made the gruesome discovery.
“Now officials have taken it to examine it and see how it died,” he said, adding that it likely got caught in fishing nets.
Mr Loeung said the dolphin, which was dead for some time based on its decomposition, weighed 200 kilograms and was one metre in length.
Fisherman Sem Sok said it is not the first time he’s heard of a dolphin dying from getting caught in nets.
“The fishermen do not want to kill dolphins,” he said. “But sometimes it gets caught in the net; some fishermen know this, and hurry to help those caught, but sometimes they do not make it in time to rescue them.”
On Sunday, a 400-kilogram whale shark died in fishing nets in Kep province.
