An armed robber in Siem Reap province was arrested yesterday after he shot at police while stealing a motorbike. Police returned fire and shot him in the hand.

Nop Vireak, 26, from Kampong Cham province, was accused of illegal use of a weapon and theft.

Prasath Bakuong district police deputy chief Srey Than said Mr Vireak stole the motorbike belonging to farmer Chab Chen.

Mr Chen shouted for help as Mr Vireak drove off. Police on patrol nearby gave chase.

“When police drove motorbikes to chase the stolen motorbike, Mr Vireak fired four bullets at them but they were not injured,” Mr Than said.

“Police fired many times back at him and injured his hand.”

He said that after being injured, Mr Vireak abandoned the motorbike and fled into a nearby forest where he was arrested.

Police confiscated a handgun and unused bullets from him.

Mr Vireak will be sent to the provincial court today.
