A 51-year-old-soldier was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing a woman in a frenzied knife attack after she fought off his attempt to rape her.
The attack took place late on Thursday in Preah Vihear province’s Choam Ksan district.
District Military Police deputy commander Bun Long said Kong Thy drank rice wine until midnight that evening with friends in Rong Roeung 5 village.
Mr Long said Mr Thy felt like having sex with Yan Chantha, 39, who lived alone in the same village because her husband was working in construction in Thailand.
Mr Thy, who knew Ms Chantha, went into her house and woke her up.
He asked her for sex but she refused and told him to get out.
Mr Thy grabbed her and tried to rape her but she resisted and shouted loudly for help.
“He was angry at the victim for refusing to have sex with him and shouting loudly,” Mr Long said.
“He then took a long knife he brought with him and stabbed her many times on her face and head. She died of her wounds in her room.
“After killing the victim, he fled from her house.”
Neighbours found Ms Chantha the same night after hearing her screams.
Mr Thy, of the 9th Intervention Military Unit in Preah Vihear province, was arrested by district military police based on blood on his shoes, which were left at the victim’s house.
Spots of the victim’s blood were found on his knife and shirt. An officer with the provincial military police said Mr Thy was being held at provincial military police headquarters.
“He was preliminarily accused by military police of attempted rape and intentional murder.
He is facing 10 to 15 years in prison if convicted,” he said.
Mr Thy will be sent to the provincial court for questioning today.
