Thousands of free condoms handed out to festival goers

Sen David / Khmer Times Share:

The National AIDS Authority is distributing 60,000 free condoms to boat racers and patrons celebrating the Water Festival this week in order to help curb the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Teng Kunthy, secretary-general of the National AIDS Authority, said education was also being offered to people as the condoms were handed out.

“We hope this campaign provides more education to people about AIDS and HIV and that they protect themselves,” he said.

He said the campaign mostly focussed on distributing condoms to places where boat racers will be camping over the three-day festival, which kicked off yesterday.

The campaign also offered free HIV testing.

Non Vanna, 45, from Kandal province, said he received a free condom.

“When they gave it to me, I accepted it even though I am not looking to have sex with anyone,” he said.

Last year, the National AIDS Authority distributed 50,000 condoms during the Water Festival.

In July 2017, the UN released a report that found Cambodia is ahead of every country in Asia and the Pacific for its treatment of HIV.

The report found that 57,000 people living with HIV in the country were accessing antiretroviral therapy, representing 80 percent of all people estimated to be infected.
