Gang members sought over pagoda shooting

Police are seeking to arrest five young gang members over the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old at a dance in Banteay Meanchey province on Monday night.

Svay Chek district police officer Kong Samoeun said the murder took place at Don Noy pagoda.

He identified the victim as Chhay Reaksmey, a local farmer.

Mr Samoeun said the victim and the suspects had all attended a dance at the pagoda on the night of the attack.

“The victim got into an argument with the suspects because he tried to dance with a girl who was the girlfriend of one of the gang members,” the officer said.

“The boyfriend of the girl was angry. He fired three bullets at the victim’s head, killing him immediately,” he said.   

“After the shooting, the suspects fled.”

Svay Chek district police chief Chea Slonh said the suspects were gang members living in Thmar Pouk district.

“Police are seeking their arrest in order to bring them to justice,” he said.
