A 22-year-old taxi driver was arrested on Tuesday and accused of raping and trying to kill a nine-year-old girl.

The attack happened on Tuesday evening on vacant land in Meanchey district on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

District police officer Ly Savuth said suspect Nhor Neang lived at a shipping warehouse in Prek Torl village near the girl’s home.

He offered the girl sweets to lure her to the vacant land where he raped her.

“After the rape, the suspect was afraid that the victim would tell her parents or police,” Mr Savuth said. “He tried to kill her by taking a big stone and beating her many times on her face and head. He caused her serious injuries and she lost consciousness.

“After beating the victim, he probably thought she was dead. He fled to the warehouse where he was living.”

The victim was found by her parents about three hours later after a search when they realised she was missing.

They found her alive and unconscious at the crime scene and took her to hospital.

Based on the victim’s answers, police arrested Mr Neang at about 11pm the same night.

District deputy police chief Hour Mengvang said Mr Neang was accused of rape and attempted murder.

He was being held at the district police station and would be sent to the municipal court for questioning today.
