A 33-year-old village security guard was charged yesterday in Kampong Speu Provincial Court for beating his 36-year-old wife, causing her to miscarry her four-month pregnancy.
The attack occurred on Saturday at about 7.30 pm at the suspect’s house in Odoung district.
Mom Chenda, an Odoung district police officer, identified the accused as Man Meth, an Andong Chrou village security guard.
He was yesterday charged by the provincial court prosecutor with an intentional act of violence under aggravating circumstances, Mr Chenda said.
The victim was identified as Bou Sokim, 36, a farmer allegedly beaten by her husband with a piece of timber after falling to the ground.
Mr Chenda said the accused returned to his home drunk on Saturday and attempted to have sex with his wife, who refused his advances, scolding him for being drunk.
“He was angry at his pregnant wife for denying sex with him and criticising him over his drinking,” he said. “He beat her using his hands, causing her to fall onto the ground.
“While the victim was on the ground, he took a big piece of wood and beat her back, which caused a miscarriage.”
Mr Chenda added that the suspect fled the house after beating the victim, but was later arrested by local police the same night.
The victim was rescued by neighbours, sent to the provincial referral hospital for treatment and has since returned home.
