A 46-year-old Czech tourist was yesterday charged for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl in Siem Reap province.
Chea Heng, deputy chief of Siem Reap’s anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection unit, said the suspect was accused of sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 15.
“The provincial court’s investigative judge sent him to prison,” Mr Heng said. “He faces five to 10 years if convicted.”
Mr Heng said the suspect was arrested at his rented house in Siem Reap city on Sunday.
Police seized girls’ clothes, toys, condoms, a digital camera and a laptop, as well as other related materials, in the raid.
According to police investigators, the suspect frequently visited the girl’s family last year and asked to adopt the girl.
He allegedly gave the girl’s parents between $20 and $50 each time he visited.
After gaining the trust of the family, the victim was allowed to visit him at his rental property. Police said the man sexually abused her during the visits.
Khoem Vando, programme director at the NGO Action Pour Les Enfants, said the whole family had been groomed and became dependent on the abuser.
“We believe that giving the community the right knowledge to act will better prevent abuse from happening,” he said.
Mr Vando added the NGO and its partner organisations were providing support for the girl and her family.
