A 45-year-old farmer in Siem Reap province was arrested on Saturday night and accused of attempted murder for slashing his wife’s face with a knife because she would not stop applying make-up.
Bun Chantha, a police officer with Sotr Nikum district police, said the attack occurred at about 9.30pm inside the suspect’s house in Darun commune on Saturday.
Mr Chantha identified the suspect as Chorn Sok, and the victim as his wife, Run Mab, 46, who is recovering from her injuries in the provincial hospital.
Mr Chantha said that before the attack, the suspect asked his wife to stop putting on make-up every morning and night.
The suspect thought his wife was applying make-up to attract other men in the village, Mr Chantha said.
“He was angry at his wife for always putting on make-up and not listening to him to stop,” he said.
“He took a long knife and cut her many times on both cheeks to kill her.”
“The attack caused serious injuries to her cheeks and ears,” he added.
“After cutting his wife, he fled from the house but was arrested by local police the same night.”
Mr Chantha said the victim was rescued by neighbours and sent to the provincial referral hospital for treatment.
Mr Chantha added that the suspect is being detained at the provincial police headquarters and has been accused of attempted murder prior to his first court appearance today.
