Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on the public to join together and donate blood to save people’s lives, including children who need blood in emergencies.
Mr Hun Sen made the plea for people to take part in World Blood Donor Day tomorrow on social media.
“There are a lot of patients, including children, who are in need of blood,” he said.
“Please, citizens, all join together.” He added that World Blood Donor Day this year would be held in the new National Blood Transfusion Centre near the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital.
He expected more than 600 local people and international tourists to participate.
Mr Hun Sen said Cambodia needed 200 blood bags per day to save people’s lives.
The annual World Health Organisation event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank donors. The slogan for the 2017 campaign is: What can you do?
The secondary message is: Give blood. Give now. Give often.
Dr Hok Kimcheng, director of the transfusion centre, said last month the demand for blood is increasing every year.
“We have blood donated from charities and relatives of patients. If we do not have donations from youths and other citizens, we would not be able to help patients on time,” he said.
