Six armed robbers were convicted yesterday by Kandal Provincial Court and sentenced to eight years each for stealing a businessman’s property in Mouk Kampol district.
Hul Sothy, 43, Chhay Phirum, 35, Huth Han, 32, Hin Chantha, 31, Heang Sopha, 43, and Heng Chena, 36, were charged with theft with aggravating circumstances and possession or transportation of weapons and firearms without permission.
Judge Say Samphos said they were arrested on March 5 and 6 by Kandal provincial police after a failed attempt to rob the owner of a construction materials shop.
Police confiscated three guns, including two pistols and an AK-47 rifle.
A police report said the six were an experienced gang of thieves and former prisoners. Mr Sothy was the mastermind. Mr Sothy and Mr Phirum had been sentenced previously to eight years in prison for theft with aggravating circumstances and were freed in 2014.
Mr Han had been sentenced to 10 years in prison on the same charge and was released in 2015.
Mr Chantha was jailed for seven years on the same charged and was freed in 2014.
Mr Sopha and Ms Chena had been jailed for two years for drug trafficking. They were released in 2014.
After their release, the gang resumed their criminal activities.
They travelled around stealing from villagers in Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, Kratie and Kandal provinces.
