Police in Takeo province found an unexploded bomb while an excavator was digging in Daung Keo town on Tuesday.
Town deputy police chief Siv Samith said the bomb would be collected soon by bomb disposal experts from the Cambodian Mine Action Centre.
“We found the bomb and left it right there in the hole so that CMAC can come and collect it,” he said. “We went to inspect the area after the driver of the excavator notified us he might have found a bomb while digging deep inside the forest in Thmey village.”
“The plot of land belongs to a citizen and he had hired the driver to dig some soil,” he added. “If the driver had hit the bomb harder, it might have exploded.”
Yun Ny, chief of ordnance management with the provincial police, said the 228kg bomb was probably dropped by a US warplane during the Lon Nol regime.
Cambodia has called on the United States for cooperation to clear bombs dropped during the Indochina conflict over fears they are affecting the health of citizens more than 40 years on.
