A police officer was arrested early yesterday for shooting four bullets at his own car mirrors in a jealous rage.

The shooting happened at about 1.30am in front of the Holiday Hotel in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district.

Municipal police officer Long Seng said the arrested officer was third lieutenant Leng Theara, 33, of the municipal major crimes unit.

Mr Seng said that before the shooting, Lt Theara drove to pick up his wife, who was working in the hotel. He waited for her for a long time.

When she finished work and came to meet him, Lt Theara, who was jealous, became angry and blamed her for the wait. They argued.

“To reduce his anger, he took his handgun and fired four bullets at his car mirrors and broke them,” Mr Seng said.

“After shooting at his car, he kept arguing with his wife and threatened to kill her.  He did not flee.

“He was arrested by military police in cooperation with local police while he was there.”

Police confiscated a handgun and ammunition.

Lt Theara was accused of illegal use of a weapon and was being held for questioning by municipal military police. He will be sent to Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning today.
