Hundreds of turtles, pythons and snakes were confiscated yesterday in Takeo province’s Angkor Borei district as a truck driver tried to smuggle them into Vietnam.

Provincial deputy military police chief Chhim Sowatdy said national and provincial military police seized about a tonne of wild animals.

It is believed that many of the animals were heading for the dinner table. Supplied

“We arrested two people, a truck driver and a driver’s assistant, but they were not the owners of the animals,” he said.

Officials stopped them before they were able to smuggle the animals to Vietnam, where the animals were likely to be used for food and for the snake skins to be made into shoes and bags.

Mr Sowatdy said a spy for the military police investigated the case before forces took action.

The arrested pair were sent to the forestry administration to face legal action. The animals were released into the Tamao Mountain Zoo.

A report said there were 176 kilos of pythons, 80 kilos of turtles and the 644 kilos of other kinds of snake.

The turtles filled four sacks. There were 11 bags of pythons and 59 bags of other snakes.
