Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 25-year-old man with attempted murder for trying to kill his girlfriend with a meat cleaver in a jealous bout of rage last week.
Teng Sino, Meanchey district police chief, identified the accused as Seav Fong, 25, a computer technician.
Mr Sino said the suspect was arrested by police Friday at a rental room in Teuk Thla commune after being on the run for the attempted murder for 10 days. He faces 10 to 15 years in jail if convicted.
The attempted murder took place in Stung Meanchey commune, where the suspect used a meat cleaver to attack his girlfriend, cutting her throat, hands and fingers.
“He said the reason he cut the victim’s throat was because he was jealous,” Mr Sino said. “He was angry at her for allegedly having an affair with another man.”
According to a police report, the suspect had gone out drinking with friends and his girlfriend before the attack at 1am on October 10.
When his girlfriend became too cosy with one of the group, he became convinced they were having an affair and later attacked her, once back at their rental room, said Mr Sino.
The victim was rescued by neighbours after she shouted for help and the suspect fled. She remains in hospital recovering from her injuries.
