One of two thieves suspected of stealing from the apartments of rich people was being questioned yesterday.

Bun Sophal, deputy chief of Interior Ministry major crimes police, said Kong Mean, 32, had been accused by police of theft with aggravating circumstances.

“He was an experienced thief who drove around in a car to steal from rich people’s villas or apartments late at night,” Mr Sophal said.

“He was arrested after he failed in his third robbery of an apartment in Sen Sok district on Sunday night.”

He said that last Thursday at about 1am, the suspect and his friend drove to steal from a villa in Phnom Penh Thmey commune while the owner was out.

One of them climbed into the house and stole about $15,000 before getting back in the car and fleeing.

Late the next day, they stole from another apartment in the same area and took $37,000.

On Sunday, they drove to another apartment in the district. But while they were climbing into the apartment, they were seen by a security guard who shouted out.

Fearing arrest, they fled leaving the car behind.

Police arrested Mr Mean on Wednesday after he left his identity card and other documents in the car. The other suspect is still at large.
